Tom Lewis as a two-time European Tour winner wasn’t fanciful when he turned pro in 2011. It was expected. Yet not many expected him to win the $2.35 million Portugal Masters.

The Englishman took the title for the second time after his maiden win in 2011. He just had to endure seven years of suffering to get his name back on the trophy.

Lewis returned a closing 5-under 66 to post reach a 22-under 262 total to win by three shots over Eddie Pepperell and 54-hole leader Lucas Herbert. He picked up a check for $390,000. More importantly, it secures his European Tour status. The 27-year-old began the tournament 163rd on the European money list, but receives a two-year exemption with the win.

The man from Sir Nick Faldo’s hometown of Welwyn Garden City turned professional in 2011 after an excellent amateur career. He made headlines in the 2011 Open Championship when he shared the lead after an opening 65. He went on to win the silver medal as low amateur, and then won his first Portugal Masters in just his third pro start.

Lewis’s game deteriorated and he lost his European Tour status in 2016. He’s mixed his time this year playing the European Challenge Tour and any European Tour event he could get into.

Victory in the Challenge Tour’s Bridgestone Challenge earlier this month moved him to 12th on the Challenge Tour rankings, with the top 15 earning a full 2019 European Tour card. It also provided the catalyst to his comeback win.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Lewis, the first player to win the Portugal Masters twice. “It’s been a rough ride, but this week I played hard.

“To be back here in Portugal and play the way I played and to have the crowds we had, I feel great right now. I think this one means more, it means a lot to come and win this again. The next win was always going to mean more because of how much I work for it.

“Hopefully I can do better than I did last time, and continue to do what I’ve been doing with the team that I’ve got and the support and not ease off the gas and keep pushing forwards.”

This could finally be the day.

Tiger Woods takes a three-shot lead into the final round of Tour Championship at East Lake, as he has set himself up perfectly for his first win in five years (and 80th overall on the PGA Tour).

Woods tees off in the final pairing Sunday at 2:05 p.m. ET and we’ll be tracking his entire round, shot by shot. Will he break that long victory drought and bring a nice, long-awaited chapter in this incredible comeback of his? Follow along:

Hole No. 7: Par 4, 491 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:24 p.m. ET): This fairway wood is pretty down the right side of the fairway. Perfect.

APPROACH SHOT (3:30 p.m. ET): This one lands about 2 feet from the pin and rolls about 20 feet beyond the cup. That one was right at the pin, so Tiger is still flowing.

ON THE GREEN (3:37 p.m. ET): Tiger lags this one to about a foot and taps in for par. The lead is still five.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 7 (13 under overall, 1st)

Hole No. 6: Par 5, 507 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:09 p.m. ET): This is another great driver. It’s blasted down the right-center of the fairway. He’ll have an iron for his second, and he has to think anything worse than birdie here now is a disaster.

APPROACH SHOT (3:13 p.m. ET): Uhh … Tiger drops the club on the follow through as he hates this shot. This 4-iron from 217 yards comes out as a low draw but actually doesn’t turn out too badly. This screamer lands a few feet from the cup and races into the rough beyond the green. Looks like that one sat down and could leave a tricky one, but he’ll have a 30-foot chip for eagle.

AROUND THE GREEN (3:17 p.m. ET): Flubs that one, terrible. It goes maybe 5 feet in front of him. That’ll leave him a quick 25-footer for birdie from the fringe.

ON THE GREEN (3:21 p.m. ET): Tiger has to be cautious with this one and leaves it a few feet short. But he does clean up for par. That’s a pretty bad par, but his lead is still five.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 6 (13 under overall, 1st)

Hole No. 5: Par 4, 446 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:54 p.m. ET): Thumbs up on that one. This driver finds the left-center of the fairway, and that is ideal. Much better swing with the big stick than on the previous hole.

APPROACH SHOT (3:00 p.m. ET): Another solid, safe shot. This one from 121 yards lands and stops about 18 feet right of the pin. Justin Rose bogeyed up ahead, so Tiger now has a FIVE-shot lead. And he has a decent look at birdie here.

ON THE GREEN (3:05 p.m. ET): What a good putt, but it was fractions to far left. That ball trickles and trickles and just inches over the left edge and doesn’t drop. A quarter-inch farther right and that probably curls in. But even with par, his lead moves from 4 to 5. He is cruising with a par 5 coming.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 5 (13 under overall, 1st)

Hole No. 4: Par 4, 440 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:40 p.m. ET): Tiger’s first mistake of the day. He takes driver and this fade peels off and his ball just trickles into the right rough. Seemed like that went maybe 10-15 yards right of where he wanted. Not blocked out or anything. If he has a decent lie, that miss won’t hurt him.

APPROACH SHOT (2:45 p.m. ET): That was a tough lie and this one comes out dead. This one from 174 yards falls off a bit right and rolls short in the right greenside bunker. He has a good lie in there, and with pin front left, this is a 20-yard bunker shot with tons of green to work with. Long-ish bunker shot, but not a tough up and down.

AROUND THE GREEN (2:48 p.m. ET): That’s decent, but far from stone dead. The angle was actually a little harder than we thought as he was short of the green and had to land this close to the hole otherwise the ball would get stopped in the fringe. This one finishes about 8 feet below the hole. That left for par.

ON THE GREEN (2:52 p.m. ET): DEAD. CENTER. That putt was perfect, and we mean perfect. Right in the center, died in the cup. He walked it in. HUGE par save. The lead remains four.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 4 (13 under overall, 1st)

Hole No. 3: Par 4, 386 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:29 p.m. ET): Tiger takes iron here and that is just fine. This one lands and rolls down the right side of the fairway. He’ll have a short-iron or wedge in from there.

APPROACH SHOT (2:33 p.m. ET): Honestly, not his best from 112 yards, but Tiger safely gets this wedge to finish 15 feet beyond the cup. Pin was tucked in front just over a bunker, so that is the smart play. Way better than coming up short. Tough downhill putt, but par at worst we imagine.

ON THE GREEN (2:37 p.m. ET): That was pretty mediocre, to be honest, but no harm done. Big swinger from left to right downhill that TW leaves a couple feet under and right of the cup. He taps in for par. Pretty meh hole, but nothing lost. Lead is still four.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 3 (13 under overall, 1st)

Hole No. 2: Par 3, 202 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:19 p.m. ET): A 6-iron from Tiger and this is a solid one. This draw lands about 30 feet right and short of the hole and just trickles forward. Probably about 25 feet for birdie. A nice safe shot, and he should have no problems here.

ON THE GREEN (2:25 p.m. ET): Just showing no nerves. That was more like 35 feet, but Tiger handles just fine. Not enough speed, but it was right on line and comes up a foot short. Easy par, and another great sign that this will be the day. Lead is still four.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 2 (13 under overall, 1st)

Hole No. 1: Par 4, 455 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:06 p.m. ET): That was PERFECT. Just roasts a driver down the right-center and gives it a nice little twirl to boot. That is well place. We are off in style!

APPROACH SHOT (2:11 p.m. ET): Oh man, that was the old Tiger right there. That pin is tucked right, but Tiger got aggressive from 164 yards and lands this just left and short of the pin. It rolls out a touch and finishes 8 feet left of the cup. Great birdie look to start. He is feeling it right now.

ON THE GREEN (2:17 p.m. ET): WALKED. IT. IN. Opening birdie and the lead is now four. That gave us chills. What a start!

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 1 (13 under overall, 1st)

Pre-round

As we wait for Tiger to tee off, a great look at how he’s gotten to this point after years of struggles that had us wondering if he’d ever play again, let alone win…
